New borrowers may be eligible for federal aid if you decide to return to school until the loan is paid in full, says Lori Bloomberg, assistant vice president for the U.S. Bank Student Banking Division. After the grace period, a deferment or forbearance can also temporarily suspend repayment. (See explanations below.) Two types of mortgages need special attention. A three-year or five-year hybrid might charge 0.25 percentage points less than a 30-year fixed. But why open yourself to the risk of rising rates for such a small monthly saving? Avoid.
